Short course to long course swim time conversion
Short-course and long-course times cannot be compared by pool length alone. The course changes the number of turns, underwater opportunities, and sometimes the equivalent race distance.

Choose the course where the swim happened, select the target course, then use a conversion method that accounts for distance and walls. Treat the result as an estimate: the same formula cannot model every swimmer's starts, turns, and underwater speed.
SCY, SCM, and LCM courses

SCY and SCM are both short course, but a yard is shorter than a meter. LCM uses a 50-meter pool, so the swimmer gets fewer wall push-offs over the same metric race distance.
Why the number of walls matters
A turn can provide speed from the approach, push-off, streamline, and underwater phase. Short-course races include more of those opportunities. Strong turn and underwater swimmers may therefore lose more time when moving to long course than a fixed formula predicts. Stroke and race distance also affect the difference.
Match the equivalent race distance
Most sprint and middle-distance events keep the same displayed number. Common U.S. distance freestyle events use different pairings when converting yards to meters:

SCM to LCM example
A 100-meter freestyle in SCM has three turns, while the same event in LCM has one. A classical conversion starts with the short-course result and adds an estimated adjustment for the two fewer wall opportunities. The exact difference depends on the method and swimmer.
SCY to LCM example
Using this site's classical method, a 52.43 100-yard freestyle estimates to 59.80 for 100-meter LCM. The calculation first converts the yard result to a meter baseline, then applies the sprint turn adjustment.
Can long course be converted back to short course?
Yes. An LC-to-SC conversion reverses the course factor and estimates the value of the additional walls. It remains an estimate, and rounding means a forward conversion followed by a reverse conversion may not return the exact original hundredth.
Limits of any swimming time conversion
- It does not predict fitness, race execution, or future improvement.
- Starts, turns, underwater distance, stroke, and fatigue vary by swimmer.
- It does not replace an organizer's approved qualifying-time table.
- Relay starts, altitude, suits, and timing-system differences are not modeled.
