Convert swim times from yards to meters
To convert a swimming result from yards to meters, identify whether the target is a 25-meter (SCM) or 50-meter (LCM) pool. The pool length changes the estimate as well as the unit.
Quick answer
- Confirm the original pool is 25 yards (SCY).
- Choose either SCM or LCM as the target.
- Match the equivalent event distance.
- Apply a course method and treat the result as an estimate.
SCY to SCM is not SCY to LCM
SCM and LCM both use meters, but a 100-meter SCM race includes three turns while a 100-meter LCM race includes one. That changes the time available from push-offs and underwater work.
| Source event | SCM equivalent | LCM equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 100 yd freestyle | 100 m freestyle | 100 m freestyle |
| 500 yd freestyle | 400 m freestyle | 400 m freestyle |
| 1650 yd freestyle | 1500 m freestyle | 1500 m freestyle |
Worked example
Suppose a swimmer records 52.43 in a 100-yard freestyle. A converter first maps yards to meters, then accounts for the target pool course. The LCM estimate is normally slower than SCM because it has fewer walls.
Use the result responsibly
Use converted results for broad comparison, training groups, and goal setting. For meet entry, always follow the organizer’s approved tables and policies.
Use the Swim Time Converter to compare both meter courses, then open the split calculator to turn the estimate into a race plan.
